We designed the first case in code

Hardware

The first Heed case is not drawn in a CAD program. It is Python, written with build123d, and every dimension lives in one parameters file. Change a number, run the script, and it rebuilds the parts, checks that they fit and exports files for printing.

Heed taken apart: the cap, the board and storage, the battery, the tray and the garment plate

What is in it

  • Size: 35.6 × 42.6 × 14 mm, about the footprint of the 500 mAh battery plus the walls.
  • Inside: a Seeed XIAO nRF52840 Sense board with its microphone, the battery, a microSD breakout, a slide switch through the side wall and a side button pressed through a printed pin.
  • On the face: a microphone port and a window for the recording light.
  • On the back: two disc magnets. A printed garment plate with two more magnets sits behind the fabric, so the puck clips through a collar or pocket with no pin and no hole in your shirt. A lanyard loop covers days without a collar.
  • Printed parts: the cap, the tray, the garment plate and the button pin.

What we have not verified

Every value marked VERIFY in the parameters file comes from a datasheet or an estimate: the board thickness, the tallest parts, the microSD breakout (a placeholder until we choose one), and the positions of the microphone port and the light. We will measure the real parts with calipers before ordering a print, and we will post what did not fit.

What is next

Measure, print, and assemble the first case, then wear it through a working day.

We plan the next update for 31 October 2026.
