Storage for the first production run
Open14 days left · Closes 31 October 2026
Context and trade-offs
The pod stores audio on the device and syncs to your phone later, so storage decides how long Heed can record away from your phone. Audio is Opus at 24 kbps, mono. Our plan today is 512 MB soldered; this vote decides it for the first production run.
This is binding: we will build the board with the winning option. If supply or a test result makes that impossible, we will say so here first, with the reason.
| 512 MB soldered | 8 GB soldered | microSD slot | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recording time | About 40 hours, two days or more with voice detection | About 680 hours | Hundreds of hours on a 16 to 32 GB card |
| Cost | Lowest cost | Several times the cost of 512 MB at today's memory prices | Cheap part, but a socket and a card add parts and a failure point |
| Trade-off | Soldered, so nothing comes loose | Soldered too, but every unit carries the extra cost, whether you need the hours or not | A card can lose contact when dropped, needs power switching to save battery, adds about 2 mm of thickness, and fake cards are common |
Exact part costs stay closed until they are real. The open book explains why.
We follow the result. If we cannot, we publish why before we do anything else.
